Who is this course for?

All users of adventure activity personal protective equipment including climbing, mountaineering and caving equipment as well as water helmets and buoyancy aids such as independent instructors, outdoor education centre instructors, stores staff and mountain rescue team members.

All adventure activities personal protective equipment (PPE) requires checking prior to and after use. All personnel who use PPE must be able to check their own equipment and equipment used by group members who they are responsible for to ensure its safe condition before use.

We have designed this course to give the appropriate background information on legislation and equipment performance as well as passing on the skills necessary to carry out suitable inspections.

Topics are covered using a combination of hands-on product checking training and classroom presentations.

At the end of the course, following successful completion of a formal assessment, you should be able to undertake your own pre-use checks. You should also be able to identify damage and/or defects that would necessitate an item being taken out of service and passed to a ‘competent’ person for thorough examination.
