This course builds on the skills covered in the Emergency Services Work at Height course (course code LT10ES) and introduces the use of Height Packs for specific work at height and rescue operations.  This largely practical training course includes scenario-based exercises relevant to Fire and Rescue operations.

Prerequisites

  • Due to the nature of the training, candidates are required to confirm that they are medically fit and healthy prior to commencing practical training.
  • The minimum age of candidates is 18 years.
  • Candidates should have basic work at height skills.  Ideally, candidates will have attended the Lyon Emergency Services Work at Height course (or equivalent).

Course Content

The course is primarily ‘hands-on’ and will include scenario-based exercises conducted either in our dedicated training facility at Tebay or at a number of nearby ‘natural’ venues as appropriate.  The programme can be adjusted to fulfil the specific technical requirements of the parent brigade.  Candidate to instructor ratio will not exceed 4:1 for practical sessions.

Each course will cover:

  • The principles of the Work at Height Regulations and other relevant legislation including Confined Spaces Regulations
  • Application of a risk assessed approach to working at height and factors to be taken into account
  • Review of work restraint, work positioning and fall arrest skills
  • Introduction to and limitations of the equipment and techniques within Height Pack use
  • Introduction to two-line working
  • Practical application of the equipment carried in Height Packs for work at height and specific rescue operations including:
    • Work restraint
    • Belaying/life-lining a firefighter
    • Lowering and raising a firefighter
    • Emergency casualty extrication from height/confined spaces
  • An appreciation of medical considerations during work at height and rescue.
  • Care, pre and after-use checks of Personal Fall Protection Equipment and Height Pack equipment

Assessment

The course assessment is by short written test and continuous practical assessment by Lyon staff.

Certification

A certificate of attendance and test and ID card record of training will be issued to successful candidates.  Certificate valid for three years from date of assessment.
